BGC Trust University students block Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway

Update : 08 Sep 2014, 06:50 PM

Law students of BGC Trust University blocked the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway in Chandanish upazila of Chittagong yesterday demanding to participate in the written test for enrolment as advocates upon permission from the Bar Council.

In a newspaper report the Bar Council declared the Prabartak campus of BGC Trust University illegal, following which the students began their protest.

They said they would not be able to participate in the enrolment exam if the campus was declared illegal. University sources said the students took to the highway in front of their main campus located in Bidyanagar area around 11am halting the traffic movement.

The blockade created long tailbacks on the road. However, upon receiving information, police went to the spot and tried to quell the situation, said Chandanish police station Sub-Inspector Md Humayun Kabir Mridha. The students withdrew the blockade after an hour following assurance from the university authority of taking necessary steps to meet their demand.

On Saturday, the law students vandalised the university’s Prabartak campus to press home the same demand.

Following the incident, Nurul Huda Shikdar, registrar of university, said a writ petition had already been filed with the High Court in this regard.
