Law students of BGC Trust University staged a demonstration and vandalised a university building to press home their demand for the Bar Council permission to participate in the written test for enrolment as advocates.
University and police sources said several hundred law students demonstrated at the Prabartak campus from 10am to 1pm.
The infuriated students vandalised a building but law enforcers quelled the unrest around 1pm, said police.
The students tried to block the road but police prevented them, said Officer-in-Charge of Panchlaish police station Mohiuddin Mahmood.
Some of the demonstrators also assaulted four photojournalists of different newspapers who were taking photos of the protest, and also hurled abuse at them. Chittagong Photojournalists’ Association in a statement condemned the assault on the photojournalists.
Protesters said they came to know from newspaper reports that the Bar Council was about to announce the Prabartak campus illegal which is why they decided to stage a protest.
They said they would not be able to participate in the enrolment exam if the campus was declared illegal.
They also threatened to continue the agitation until the university authorities settled the issue.
Registrar of the university Nurul Huda Shikder said a writ petition had already been filed with the High Court in this regard.
“The Bar Council is likely to hold a meeting today to discuss the matter. However, the students went for demonstration without waiting to see the final outcome,” he said.
