BCL factions clash at RU hall in midnight

Two factions of Abdul Latif Hall unit Chhatra League at Rajshahi University locked into a clash in early hours Saturday over supremacy.

The clash ensued at 12:30am on Saturday. During the clash the BCL activists were seen wielding locally and foreign made firearms and weapons while they ran vandalism in several rooms of the hall.

Residents of the hall said a group of eight to 10 BCL activists led by Shamim Ahmed, a fourth year student of applied physics and also a president aspirant in the hall unit committee, went to the room no 210 of the hall where Mizanul Haque Mizan, a four year student of physics department and also aspirant for the same post.

At one stage of altercation between Shamim and Mizan, a chase and counter chase inside the hall erupted among their fellow activists.

Mizan and his followers vandalised the window-panes and doors of the rooms under Shamim’s control during the clash.

Later, both groups took position inside the hall with firearms and sharp weapons.

Hearing the news, BCL RU unit president Mizanur Rahman Rana along with law enforcers rushed to the hall at 1am and brought the situation under control.

During the incident, a tense spread out among the resident students of the hall and no major injuries was reported.

Mizan alleged that Shamim and his followers went to his room and attacked him without any reason while Shamim alleged, he went to Shamim to discuss over a matter but his followers attacked him.

BCL RU unit president Mizanur Rahman Rana told Dhaka Tribune the incident resulted from a misunderstanding and resolved immediately.

Hall provost, Bishwanath Shikder said he went to the hall at night hearing the news. He assured the situation was under control.
