Bangladesh has won a silver medal and a bronze at the 55th Mathematics Olympiad in South Africa.
Dhaka College student Nur Muhammad Shafiullah won the silver medal while Adib Hasan from Mymensing Zila School won the Bronze.
Four other students who got an honourable mention award are Sanzeed Anwar, Asif E Elahi, Sazid Akhter Turzo and Mutasim Mim.
The result, which was announced by International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) yesterday, is also available on the organisation’s site.
Confirming the feat of Bangladeshi students to the Dhaka Tribune, President of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad president Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury said the team’s total score is 84 and Bangladesh’s rank is 53 among 101 team.
He termed the result best Bangladesh team has made in the last 10 years.
“The most encouraging thing is that comparatively new and young members of the team did well in the Olympiad,” he told Dhaka Tribune. “We hope that we will get more medals in the coming years.”
