Dhaka University Day today

The Dhaka University Day will be celebrated on the campus premises today with traditional festivity and enthusiasm, marking the 93rd founding anniversary of the university.

A press release of the university says the day would be celebrated with the slogan “Higher education for economic development and social justice development.”

The university authorities have chalked out elaborate programmes, including hoisting flags at the top of all student dormitories and main buildings of the university, cutting cake, bringing out colourful procession, research exhibition, discussions, reminiscence and cultural session, sports and debate competitions, drama and short film show.

Speaker of the parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will inaugurate the day long programmes in the morning. 

The University of Dhaka was established during the British rule in 1921. Academic activities started on July 1, 1921 with 3 faculties: Arts, Science and Law; and twelve departments: Sanskrit and Bengali, English, Education, History, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Persian and Urdu, Philosophy, Economics and Politics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Law; three dormitories for students: Salimullah Muslim Hall, Dacca Hall [present Shaidullah Hall] and Jagannath Hall.

At present, around 33,000 students study at the university with 13 faculties and 11 institutes.
