Around 185 students of Balram Non-Government Primary School in Sundarganj upazila, Gaibandha have been attending classes under the open sky for 14 days as a storm completely destroyed the tin-shed school building.
Locals said the storm hit on June 13 and damaged the classrooms and the bamboo fences of the school, hampering its academic activities.
“The school is in a dilapidated state. We have written to the higher authorities, urging them to construct a school building, but to no effect,” said Headmistress Morsheda Begum.
There are frequent rains in the area during the monsoon, compelling the students to take shelter in the nearby houses. Also, the students and the teachers have to go to the nearby houses to use the toilets, sources said.
The guardians are reluctant to send their children to the school in such a circumstance. When contacted, Aktaruzzaman, upazila education officer, said steps would be taken soon to reconstruct the school building.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Anwar Mian said the school’s reconstruction should start soon.
With the assistance from the locals and the teachers, the school has been doing well every year in terms of the students’ results.
