Chittagong, Rajshahi medical colleges upgraded to varsities

Update : 16 Apr 2014, 08:48 PM

The government has decided to upgrade Chittagong and Rajshahi medical colleges to the status of medical universities.

The health and family welfare ministry issued two separate circulars in this regard on April 15.

Md Rezaul Alam, senior assistant secretary of the medical education unit-1, said the president had given the order in the circular. These will be the country’s first public medical universities.

At present there is only one medical university – Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Universities – in the country. In 1998 it was upgraded to a medical university.

A few days ago Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while visiting Chittagong and Rajshahi said both the medical colleges would be transformed into medical universities.

Earlier, the Awami League government initiated to upgrade the Dhaka Medical College to the status of a medical university but the government cancelled the decision due to huge protest of 3rd and 4th-class employees.

The health ministry high officials told the Dhaka Tribune that the authorities concerned would soon start their works to this end.
