Students declare two plots as TSC and academic building

Students of Jagannath University (JnU) declared an empty plot of Bangladesh Shomobay Bank in old Dhaka as teachers-student centre (TSC) while Sadarghat branch of Bangladesh Bank as academic building yesterday since it was the 20th day of hall recovery demonstration by students and teachers.

The students declared to build their TSC on the empty plot of Shomobay Bank which is opposite to the main gate of the university. They took control of it around 1:00pm by breaking down the boundary walls and setting fire on it.

On information, two fire-fighting units from Sadharghat Fire and Civil Defence Station rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Later, students have taken three street hawkers on the vacant space. The students asked the hawkers to sell foods from there as from now it is their TSC.

Earlier in the morning, the agitating students started their sit-in in front of Bangladesh Bank main gate of Sadarghat Branch at around 11.00 am as per their previous schedule program. The demonstrated started on the day from 10.00am by brought out procession from the campus.

During the demonstration led by Chhatra League JnU unit president Shariful Islam and general secretary Shirajul Islam, the students hung a banner on the bank gate around 12:00pm mentioning as “Bangabandhu Academic Building.”

The sit-in programme of students closed the entrance of the bank suspending all entrance and exit of the bank. For this reason, the bank activities were suspended for the day.

The agitating students also created blockade on the roads of Chittaranjan Avenue and Bahadurshah Park suspending all vehicular movement from Gulistan to Sadarghat route from 11:00am. The traffic resumed after the students withdrew their barricade around 2:00pm, said Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of police of Lalbagh division.

Talking with Dhaka Tribune, Shirajul Islam, member secretary of JnU hall recovery parishad (committee) said: “We want to turn this empty plot into our TSC as the university does not have adequate land and also establish academic building on the plot of Bangladesh Bank Sadarghat Branch as it was built on university lands.”

When asked about Wednesday’s program, he said we would seal off the main gate of B.Bank’s Sadarghat Branch and stay put on Najimuddin Hall with students.

On the other hand, teachers also brought out protest procession and held a rally on the campus. The teachers also formed human chain in front of university Shaheed Minar and joined in the sit-in program held in front of B.Bank Sadarghat branch.

Meanwhile, Kazi Firoz Rashid, the eight-member probe body convener, also local parliamentary member held a meeting with university authority at Vice-Chancellor conference room to discuss options for recovering the halls. After the meeting, he urged the students to suspend the demonstration as they had started working in full swing to recover students’ halls and other demands would be met shortly. 

The students had been agitating for long to recover 13 halls from illegal occupants since the university started its journey on October 20, 2005. The latest protests began on February 12, with teachers and staff joining in while 200 students and teachers got hurt during a clash held around campus on Feb 22 between students and police.
