Update : 02 Mar 2014, 08:20 PM

The government yesterday appointed Farzana Islam as the vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, making the anthropology professor the first woman to run a public university in the country.

President Abdul Hamid, the chancellor of the university, appointed Farzana Islam, who topped the VC panel election on February 20, as the new vice chancellor.

Another elected panel member, Abul Hossain, dean of mathematics and physical sciences faculty, was appointed as a pro-VC, sources said.

“The education ministry confirmed the new appointments of VC and pro-VC through a resolution on Sunday noon. Prof Farzana Islam and Prof Abul Hossain have already taken charge,” JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

After taking charge as the university’s chief executive, the new VC thanked the government for having faith in her and vowed to do her duty properly. She also urged all JU teachers, students, officials and staff to work together to take the university forward.

Meanwhile, the government also relieved MA Matin and Afsar Ahmed from their posts as pro-VCs.
