Bangladeshi student to join ESU meet in London

Bangladeshi university student Tousif Ahmed Ishtiaque is set to join the London-based English Speaking Union’s (ESU) annual public speaking competition to be held at the British capital from May 12-16.

ESU selected Ishtiaque, a student of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), for its prestigious annual from among students of 30 colleges and universities after several rounds of competitions.

He confirmed his ticket to London by winning Bangladesh round of the competition held at General Mostafiz Multi Purpose Hall of MIST at Mirpur cantonment yesterday.

At the final of local round, one student from the Dhaka University, two from MIST and four from different cadet colleges competed.

MIST Commandant Major General M Siddiqur Rahman was present as the chief guest in the competition when representative of HSBC Bangladesh Robert S Hamelin joined it as the special guest.

Leading business figure Asif A Chowdhury and Major General (retd) Jibon Kanai Das will lead the Bangladesh chapter of the ESSU as its chairman and secretary general.

ESU) opened its 67th branch in Bangladesh three years ago with an objective to “create global understanding through English” while it organizes the Bangladesh round of the

competition here every year when students from reputed local institutes take part.

The English-Speaking Union is an international voluntary organization founded in 1918 Royal Charter by Sir Evelyn Wrench and one of its first Chairmen was former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.
