A section of teachers of Jagannath University yesterday declared that they would boycott classes for an indefinite period expressing solidarity with the ongoing student-movement, which is demanding recovery of halls from grabbers.
A 14-member teachers’ team, led by JnU Teachers’ Association president Prof Dr Sarkar Ali Akkas declared the programme on the 12th day of the movement, after visiting the ministry of home affairs at 11.00am.
They submitted a memorandum in support of the demand.
The team leader declared they would make a ‘Hall recovery demand placement’ stage at the university campus.
Prof Dr Akkas told the Dhaka Tribune that their ongoing protest programme of boycotting classes would continue until the demands are met.
Additionally, the JnU Officers Association held a human chain in front of the Shaheed Minar at the university, expressing solidarity with the demand.
Earlier, students of the university, like all others days, brought out a procession on the campus at 9am, soon after the university opened for the day.
They held demonstrations, a protest rally and a petition signing.
JnU hall recovery agitation committee member secretary also the secretary of JnU Bangladesh Chhatra League unit, Shirajul Islam, told the Dhaka Tribune that their protest would continue until their demands are met.
They also plan to step up to tougher measures from Sunday.
Students of the university have been observing agitation programmes, including bringing out procession and arranging cultural show, in the city for the last few day, demanding measures to recover dormitories grabbed by influential quarters.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Wednesday assured the students of taking appropriate steps to recover the halls from the vested quarters.
