Assaulting teacher: JU BCL leader suspended

Update : 23 Jan 2014, 02:22 PM

A campus unit leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League was suspended for assaulting a teacher at Jahangirnagar University on Thursday night.

Procedures were underway to lodge a case on this matter, Jahangirnagar University Proctor Muzibur Rahman said after a disciplinary committee meeting.

Accused Mamun Khan will be given two working days for a show-cause, he said. Permanent action will be later decided in a syndicate committee meeting.

Chhatra League leader Mamun Khan assaulted urban and regional planning faculty Chairman Golam Moinuddin near social science faculty in the afternoon.

A teacher of that department, Sajedur Rahman, said he was witness to the incident and conveyed the information to other teachers at the university.

Victim Golam Moinuddin confirmed the assault on him and said he had submitted a written complaint against Mamun to the university proctor.

The incident took place weeks after former Vice Chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain resigned after months of protests against him.

After news spread, about a hundred teachers staged a demonstration led by the Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association at campus premises.

The association’s President Professor Ajit Kumar Mazumder blamed the former VC for the assault. “We will move against all irregularities and misrule.”

The campus unit Chhatra League President Mahmudur Rahman said university authorities will take actions against Mamun if found guilty. “We will comply in that case.”

However, the accused, Mamun, denied having assaulted the teacher. “The teachers are doing politics against me.”
