Awami League backed panel of teachers, the Blue Panel, swept the Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) elections held on Tuesday.
Professor AK Fazlul Hoque Shaha, spokesperson of the polls-administrative body, announced the results at Teachers' Club around evening.
The Blue Panel bagged nine out of the existing 15 seats including the positions for president and general secretary against the BNP-Jamaat's White Panel.
The elections, for the year 2014, was held at the Teachers' Club from 10am until 2pm. 78% of the 1779 votes were cast in the polls.
“The elections were free and fair,” Shaha told the Dhaka Tribune. “The White Panel won six posts including one for vice-president.”
Dhaka University Social Science faculty Dean Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed was re-elcted as DUTA president. Environmental Science faculty Dean Professor ASM Maksud Kamal was elected General Secretary.
Business Studies Faculty Dean Professor Shibly Rubayyatul Islam was elected treasurer, DU criminology department Chairman professor Dr Ziaur Rahman bagged the position of joint secretary.
Others were: Professor Abul Barkat, director of the Japan Study center, English department Assistant Professor Tazin Aziz Chowdhury, Islamic History and Culture Professor Akhetaruzzaman, Chemistry Department Professor Aftab Ali Sheikh and Micro-biology Professor professor Dr Sabita Rejwana Rahman.
On the other hand, DU Earth, water and Environmental Science department professor Dr Akhter Hossain Khan was elected as vice president from the White Panel in the poll.
Others from the panel are: Clinical Pharmacy and pharmacology department Professor Abul Hasanat, Physics Professor ABM Obaydul Islam, Statistics Professor Luthfor Rahman, Micro-biology Professor Layla Noor and arts Faculty Dean Professor Sadrul Amin.
