The Finance Ministry is working on a separate pay scale for teachers and employees of MPO-listed educational institutions, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Monday.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting at the Secretariat.
The Finance Ministry published the gazette for the ninth national pay scale for government employees on September 21.
Following this, the Education Ministry said teachers and employees of MPO-listed private schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions would also be brought under the new pay scale.
A separate gazette will be issued to include MPO-listed teachers and employees in the pay scale, according to the ministry. The matter has already been discussed at senior levels of the Education and Finance ministries.
The process was delayed as the prime minister and her education adviser Mahdi Amin were out of the country, ministry sources said. It gained momentum after their return.
Asked about the issue at a press conference, Milon said, “The Finance Ministry will issue a separate notification on the pay scale for MPO-listed teachers and employees. They are working on the matter.”
Ministry sources said the Education Ministry must first send a letter to the Finance Ministry seeking approval to include private-sector teachers in the ninth pay scale. The Finance Ministry will then issue a gazette formally approving the benefits for MPO-listed staff.
A separate gazette cannot be issued without the Finance Ministry’s approval, the sources added.
More than 600,000 teachers and employees nationwide are currently covered by the MPO scheme, according to the Education Ministry. Of them, around 400,000 are under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, nearly 200,000 under the Directorate of Madrasa Education, and more than 23,000 under the Directorate of Technical Education.
