Professor Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane of the Botany Department has been appointed the new pro-vice-chancellor (Administration) of Dhaka University.

A gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday announced the appointment, subject to four conditions.

He replaces Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, who was appointed to the post during the interim government.

According to the notification, issued with the approval of the president and chancellor under Article 13(1) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973, Alfasane’s tenure will be four years from the date of joining.

He will receive a salary equivalent to his current position, along with other benefits in line with existing rules, and must reside on campus. He will exercise powers and perform responsibilities assigned under university statutes, laws and directives from the vice-chancellor. The president and chancellor may revoke the appointment at any time if necessary.

A former secretary of the Dhaka University Club, Alfasane served as convener of the Faculty of Biological Sciences under Shada Dal, the BNP-Jamaat-backed teachers’ panel at the university.

He is a former secretary general of the Nationalist Research Foundation and currently serves as joint secretary general of the University Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh (UTAB). He is also an adviser to the Ziaur Rahman Foundation.

Alfasane completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Botany Department at Dhaka University before joining the faculty. He later earned his PhD from the same university.
