Several Dhaka University students have recently lost opportunities for higher education abroad due to administrative complications at the university.
In symbolic protest, a platform named “Self-Aware Students of Dhaka University” organized a mock training program on “email verification and answering phone calls.”
The demonstration was held Tuesday afternoon in front of the main gate of Dhaka University’s Administrative Building.
Hasibul Alam Tahin, a student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies and one of the organizers, said the Registrar Building’s routine operations have become problematic for students.
“Just a few days ago, a student’s admission abroad was canceled because the administration failed to verify an email. We thought — maybe it’s time someone taught these officials how to verify an email and pick up a phone call. This is a sarcastic protest,” he said.
Fellow student of the same department Arka Barua said the biggest challenge Dhaka University students face when seeking higher education abroad is getting their certificates verified by the university.
“Recently, two students were rejected and could not secure their admissions because the university simply did not respond to verification requests,” he said.
He added that when a student goes abroad for higher education—for their own growth and for the country’s benefit—the institution should make the process easier and less costly.
“This is not an isolated incident. Students have faced various forms of harassment from the administrative building over the years. Today’s event is a symbolic protest against all of that,” he said.
