Professor ABM Obaidul Islam formally takes charge as Dhaka University vice-chancellor

Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, a faculty member of the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka, has officially assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
With the approval of the Honorable President, who also serves as Chancellor, he was appointed to the position on Monday, under Article 11(2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973.
He formally took charge as Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, handed over responsibilities to him through an official ceremony.
Among those present at the event were Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury; newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan; Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University Bangladesh, Professor Md Lutfar Rahman; Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, Professor Dr Dil Roushan Jinnat Ara Nazneen; former Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Emeritus Professor Dr AFM Yusuf Haider; along with deans of various faculties, provosts of residential halls, department chairpersons, institute directors, and a large number of teachers and officials.
After assuming office, Professor Obaidul Islam delivered a brief speech at a programme held at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom. He stated that his foremost priority would be to improve the global ranking of the University of Dhaka and enhance its international visibility. He expressed confidence that these goals could be achieved through collective effort.
He also emphasized the need to ensure a conducive environment for education and research on campus, alongside a student-friendly atmosphere, and sought cooperation from all stakeholders.
Highlighting the importance of planning and implementation, he said the university would move forward through coordinated efforts. He called upon everyone to perform their responsibilities with sincerity. He also extended his appreciation and congratulations to the outgoing Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan for successfully carrying out his duties, adding that the ongoing initiatives in education, research, and infrastructure development would be continued.
