DU dept and association celebrate anniversaries

Dhaka University’s Linguistics department and Alumni Association celebrated the anniversaries of their founding at the university campus, Saturday.

Sources said the Linguistics department celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding while the Alumni Association celebrated its 65th.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the program of the Linguistics department in the presence of DU Vice-Chancellor Arefin Siddique.

Nahid said: “We have to pronounce our mother language Bangla in a proper way as well as know its proper usage.”

The education minister hoped that the students of Dhaka University would play an important role in the sectors that revolve around the practice of the Bangla language, its development and research.

“The students as well as the teachers of Dhaka University could play a pivotal role in enriching our mother language as they hold the country’s highest educational Institution,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nahid emphasised the leading role of the university during the Language Movement, Liberation war and many democratic movements.

University VC Arefin Siddique said: “Language means ones power and asset to promote cultural affairs.”

“Dhaka University has played a significant role in teaching and research the language since the very beginning of the university,” he said.

Additionally, he talked about Bangabandhu’s achievements as he spoke first in Bengali at United Nations.

On the other hand, the Alumni Association inaugurated its program by singing the national anthem and hoisting the National, university and associational Flags.

Association President Rakib Uddin Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune: “We are celebrating the day this year with excitement and joy, just like we have in the past.”

The Dhaka University Alumni Association began its journey in 1949 on September 24 under the name of “University old boys Association.” The name was later changed to “Dhaka University Alumni Association.”

University VC AAMS Arefin Siddique,former VC Imazudding Ahmed, Cultural Minister Abul Kalam Azad, Justice Bazlul Haque, Alumni Association President Rakib Uddin Ahmed, Secretary General Tomal Rashadul Hasan were among those present at the programme.
