Students of polytechnic institutions staged demonstrations and vandalised vehicles in the city of Chittagong on Sunday morning to drive home their two-point demand.
Witnesses said thousands of diploma engineers brought out a procession under the banner “Bangladesh Karigori Chhatra Parishad” in the city sometime around 10:45am.
Chanting slogans and hoisting festoons they blocked the intersection at Sholosahar Gate-2 for two hours.
They demand dissolution of “professional disparity” with BSc Engineers and ministerial-level committees to avail their situation.
The demonstration choked city traffic through adjacent areas.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police north zone Deputy Commissioner Harun-ur-Rashid Hajaree said law enforcers tried to calm the demonstrators down, but in vain.
Later, as the police chased away the demonstrators, he said. “They engaged in vandalism in the area.”
Witnesses said at least 20 vehicles were wrecked at the scene.
The incident takes place amidst a countrywide demonstration by polytechnic students demanding “proper evaluation.”
