Dhaka College Principal Prof AKM Elias has confirmed that the affiliation of seven colleges with Dhaka University (DU) has been cancelled following a meeting between the college principals and the DU administration. However, the framework for the colleges' future academic structure has not yet been finalized.
Speaking to reporters at Dhaka College on Monday, Prof Elias said: “The government has formed a committee to address the situation. The committee will engage with principals, department heads, and prominent educationists to make a well-thought-out decision regarding the new structure.”
Prof Elias announced: “Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, new admissions for these seven colleges will no longer be under Dhaka University. However, DU will continue overseeing ongoing exams and academic responsibilities for currently enrolled students.”
“While we discussed the students' six-point demands, not all issues were resolved. Decisions on certain matters are beyond our authority and will be made by the DU administration,” he explained.
The newly formed committee will identify problems, consult with stakeholders, and devise solutions. Prof Elias expressed hope for a pragmatic outcome aligned with student interests.
He emphasized: “Future decisions will involve discussions with students. Nothing will be finalized without their input.”
When asked about the controversial behaviour of DU pro-vice-chancellor (academic) during a prior clash with students, Prof Elias termed it "undesirable." He added that the matter was part of the discussions but remained unresolved.
Earlier on Monday, the DU administration held an emergency meeting with the principals of the affiliated colleges, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan. Several key decisions regarding the colleges' separation from DU were made, with further updates expected following consultations with the government-formed committee and stakeholders.
