Four students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have been suspended for alleged possession and consumption of drugs during New Year’s Eve.
A committee, led by Shahid Salam-Barkat Hall Provost Abdul Halim, has been formed to further investigate the matter.
The committee has been instructed to submit its report with recommendations within 15 working days.
This information was disclosed in a press release signed by the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Mohiuddin Ahmed, on Wednesday.
The suspended students are Hrai Muing Sang Marma and Krishan Chandra Barman from the 48th batch of the Drama and Dramatics Department, Shipon Hossain from the 51st batch of the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, and Satyartho Bishwas (Badhon) from the same institute.
According to the press release, around 1am on January 1, the university’s proctorial team caught a group of nine individuals, including the four suspended students, consuming alcohol in two separate instances near the eastern side of the Wazed Miah Science Research Center.
Among the other five individuals were three students from Dhaka University, one from Uttara University, and another from Prime Nursing College.
The accused students were apprehended with drugs and brought to the proctor’s office for questioning. Based on the initial investigation report, the JU students were temporarily suspended under the university’s Code of Conduct for Students, 2018.
Regarding the matter, JU Proctor Professor Rashidul Alam said, “The proctorial team collected written statements from both groups of students and handed over the external students to Ashulia Police Station.
Additionally, based on preliminary findings, we decided to temporarily suspend our four students. Letters will also be sent to the respective institutions of the five external students, urging them to take appropriate action.”
