THE ranking: JU leads Bangladeshi universities in education and research

  • Ranked between 801 and 1000 bracket
  • A total of 17 universities from the country have made it to this ranking

The UK-based educational magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE) has published the World University Rankings for 2025 which has placed Jahangirnagar University at the top among Bangladeshi universities in education and research.

Once again, JU has secured the top position among the country's higher education institutions.

The university has ranked between 801 and 1000 bracket in the global rankings.

Last year, JU also held the top spot in this ranking.

A total of 17 universities from the country have made it to this ranking.

This year, JU got 25.4 points out of 100 in teaching, 9.7 in Research Environment, 75.4 in Research Quality, 19.3 in Industry and 49.5 in International Outlook.

In addition to Jahangirnagar University, four other universities from the country are ranked between 801 and 1000.

These are—Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Daffodil International University, Jessore University of Science and Technology, and North South University.

This year's released ranking features more than 2,090 institutions from across 115 countries and regions.

Recognized as the world's most comprehensive evaluation of university performance, the THE World University Rankings 2025 methodology includes 18 indicators to assess institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

Additionally, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Brac University (BRACU), Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (Cuet), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), Dhaka University (DU), and Rajshahi University (RU) have been placed in the 1001-1200 bracket in the global rankings.

Meanwhile, American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) Khulna University (KU), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet), and Chittagong University have been placed in the 1201-1500 bracket in the global rankings, while Jagannath University has been placed in the 1501+ bracket.

In this year's released ranking, Oxford holds on to the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, bolstered by significant improvements in industry engagement and teaching.

MIT rises to second place, overtaking Stanford, which drops to sixth. Besides, three new countries join the top 200 - Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - highlighting the rise of emerging markets in higher education.

In a congratulatory message, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said: "Achieving the honour of being the top-ranked university in the country in the Times Higher Education rankings is a matter of pride and honour for Jahangirnagar University. This accomplishment has enhanced the university's reputation and recognition. "

"The newly appointed administration has already increased financial incentives for research and publication of research papers in international journals, with the aim of expanding education and research and improving standards. This incentive for research will continue," the VC added.

The VC also expressed hope that Jahangirnagar University would continue to progress further in global rankings in the future.
