Barisal University VC, 18 officials resign amid student protests

  • Following a 24-hour ultimatum issued by university students
  • Four hall provosts, six members of proctorial body resigned

Nineteen teachers and officials, including the vice chancellor and proctor of Barisal University, resigned on Tuesday following a 24-hour ultimatum issued by university students demanding their resignation.

BU Registrar Monirul Islam confirmed that the 19 teachers and officials, along with six members of the proctorial body, including VC Badruzzaman Bhuiyan and Proctor Abdul Qayyum, have stepped down.

Among those who resigned were the provosts of four halls, the controller of examinations, the director of physical education, the director of TSC, the director of the student counselling centre, and the librarian.

University Public Relations Officer Faisal Hasan informed the media that in his resignation letter, Prof Badruzzaman said that he was voluntarily resigning due to personal and family reasons at 11:30pm on Monday. At the same time, Abdul Qayyum and other members of the proctorial body also tendered their resignations.

Earlier, the students had announced a program demanding the resignation of the VC and proctor within 24 hours, citing various issues, including corruption and irregularities. They also surrounded the VC’s residence on Monday night. Later, the VC had announced his withdrawal from all political activities and apologized for disruptive incidents in a meeting with student representatives.
