Shafiq Uddin Ahmed Ahnaf, an eleventh grader at BAF Shaheen College Dhaka, lost his life in a clash during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which protested against discrimination in public service job quotas.
As educational institutions across the country reopened after a month of closure on Sunday, Ahnaf did not return to class. Instead, he remains in his grave, unable to join his peers.
In his memory, a bouquet was placed on a front-row seat in his classroom, a tribute that quickly went viral on Facebook.
A photo shared on social media shows students honouring Ahnaf by placing the bouquet on his desk. He was supposed to sit for the HSC exam in 2025.
Ahnaf had been an active participant in the quota reform movement from the beginning. He had returned home after being injured by tear gas shells and rubber bullets while taking part in the protests.
On August 4, Ahnaf was shot dead in a clash between police and protesters in the capital’s Mirpur-10 area. A memorial event was held in his honour at BAF Shaheen College on August 8, attended by teachers and students who remembered him with sorrow and respect.
