The students of Al-Biruni Hall of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have accused the provost, Associate Professor Sikder Zulkernine, of various irregularities and inefficiencies and demanded that he be relieved of his duties.

The agitators staged a human chain in front of the provost office on Monday afternoon and later submitted a memorandum to the vice chancellor.

Arif, a student of the university’s 46th batch, read out the memorandum at the human chain. He said the provost failed to address the issues of concern raised by the students at different times and demanded that the authorities solve the existing problems in the hall by assigning the responsibility to another teacher as soon as possible.

The students complained that the provost does not come to the hall regularly but uses the employees to occupy land in the neighbouring Islamnagar area and sometimes uses the hall office for personal reasons.

Due to his absence in the hall office, students must get necessary documents signed from his home and department. The provost has not taken any action to reopen the hall canteen, which has remained closed for two and a half months, and the salon, and to stop theft in various rooms of the hall.

Also, the provost did not take any visible action to clean the lake beside the hall, repair the road in front of the hall, and complete the unfinished renovation work on the age-old dormitory. The provost often behaves rudely with the students, they alleged.

Moreover, the students highlighted news reports published regarding the provost’s involvement in embezzlement of funds.

VC Prof Dr Nurul Alam accepted the memorandum and reassured the students of meeting their demands promptly.

When contacted, archaeology department teacher Prof Zulkernine claimed that some non-students were conspiring against him for his steps to remove them from the hall.

“I have already informed the university administration about them and sought action against them. I have always lived in the university area. In addition to the duties of the hall provost, I have to take classes in my department,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
