Update : 18 Jan 2024, 12:32 PM

The authorities have announced the closure of primary- and secondary-level educational institutions in Kurigram due to the severity of winter.

The decision was taken as the district saw its temperature drop as low as 9°C on Thursday.

District Primary Education Officer Novez Uddin Sarkar and District Education Officer Md Shamsul Alam confirmed this information.

Shamsul Alam said the decision has been taken as per the instructions of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).

A letter is being issued announcing the closure of all secondary-level educational institutions. This decision will remain in force until further notice is issued.

“If the temperature rises over 10°C or more, we will announce the decision to reopen the educational institutions,” said the district education officer.

District Primary Education Officer Md Novez Uddin Sarkar confirmed the same decision.

However, higher secondary-level educational institutions are still open. According to sources, no decision has been taken regarding the closure of these institutions.

Subal Chandra Sarkar, the official in charge of Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Observatory in the district, said a mild cold wave is sweeping over the district. This situation may continue for two more days.

Amid a cold wave sweeping across Bangladesh, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has directed the shutdown of secondary schools if the highest temperature of the districts they are located in is below 10°C.
