JUTA to continue movement against VC during Ramadan

Update : 11 Jul 2013, 04:11 AM

Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) would continue its agitation demanding the resignation of VC Prof Anwar Hossain during Ramadan.

JUTA’s acting general secretary Associate Professor Md Kamruzzaman yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune that at a recent meeting the teachers decided to submit complaint to President  Abdul Hamid, the chancellor, against the VC.

“The movement would continue until the teachers’ demand is fulfilled and JUTA’s executive body is working to send a letter to the president as soon as possible,” said Kamruzzaman.

Meanwhile, a faction of teachers under the banner of “Shadharon Shikkhok Porishad” led by Prof Ahmed Reza rejected the movement and preferred to hold formal or informal talks among the authorities and agitating teachers.

Prof Reza said: “Declaring a VC unwanted on the campus is offensive and this would not bring any solution. If both parties show cordiality and sit for discussion, I think it would bring an effective solution to the ongoing crisis.”

But JUTA denied holding any kind of discussion with the unwanted VC while they preferred to sit with any former VC of the university or any other person nominated by the chancellor.

JUTA has been blocking the administrative office since June 20 to discharge Prof Anwar. Teachers brought 12 allegations against the VC, including his failure in punishing the Bangladesh Chhatra League general secretary for assaulting a teacher, terming the university’s pro-Awami League teachers activists of Jamaat-Shibir in the media, and his failure to punish those responsible for attacks on teachers’ residence in 2012 and 2013.
