With education and research sector receiving a lower allocation, the Chittagong University (CU) senate approved the budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year on Friday.
The finance committee of CU formally announced the budget in a meeting held at the VC’s office in Dr AR Mallik Bhaban in the university premises. This year, the senate approved a budget of Tk1,346.1m with a shortage of Tk8m.
In the budget, the payment and other allowances of the CU teachers, officials and employees received higher priority with Tk861.1m allocated while the education and research sector was allocated only Tk103.4m. Pension received Tk211.5m, maintenance Tk15.7m, purchase of instruments Tk11.8m and wealth and other miscellaneous sectors Tk142.6m.
Professor Safiul Alam said the University Grant Commission (UGC) allocated Tk1,195.1m against the CU’s demand of Tk1,666.1m; however, the university has to manage Tk143m from its own fund. There is also a shortage of Tk8m in the budget, he added.
MP Mainuddin Khan Badal and Shamsuzzaman Khan and Bangla Academy Director Salauddin Akbar also took part in the pro-budget discussion.
The budget was approved at the 25th annual senate meeting with CU VC Prof Anwarul Azim Arif in the chair. CU acting registrar Prof Safiul Alam and secretary of the senate formally announced the budget
