“Rearing livestock and poultry can be the top most tool to strengthen country’s economy, besides supplying major animal protein sources like milk, meat, egg and other animal derived products for the development of a healthy nation,” said Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Prof Md Rafiqul Hoque in a discussion programme, arranged on the occasion of “Livestock Exhibition Fair” Friday.
Faculty of Animal Husbandry arranged the fair in a village named Ujankashiar Char near BAU campus as a part of Higher Education Quality Enhancing Project of University Grants Commission. It was to accelerate livestock and poultry development activities through strengthening Animal Husbandry education.
Speakers in the programme urged the common people of the country to rear livestock and poultry for bringing change in socio-economic status and eradicating the curse of poverty forever. It can help ensure empowerment of women through engaging them in livestock sector.
Rearing livestock and poultry can also help in removing poverty and unemployment from the country to build a prosperous nation, they said.
Engaging more poor women in rearing domestic animals can help increase the family income of individuals as well as the continuous supply of animal protein to ensure nutritional security, said Prof AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan of Animal Husbandry faculty of BAU.
Among others, students’ affair adviser Prof Md Sultan Uddin Bhuiya, Prof Abdul Wadud and Prof Dr Md Jasimuddin Khan spoke in the programme.
More than 100 farmers participated in the fair with their Cattle, Goats, Sheep, Ducks, Chicken and Rabbits. Hundreds of people from all walks of life, animal scientists, researchers and students of Animal Husbandry faculty visited the day-long fair.
Later, vice-chancellor of BAU handed over prizes among 15 best livestock and poultry owners.
