A teacher at Central Girls’ High School at the capital’s Sutrapur was arrested on Monday on charge of harassing a female student continuously over the last year.
Guardians and students staged demonstrations in front of the school and Sutrapur Police Station demanding exemplary punishment of the teacher.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station, told the Dhaka Tribune that they arrested Basudev Roy, a business studies teacher at the school after a case under the “Women and Children Repression Prevention Act” was filed by the victim, who passed SSC this year from the school.
In the case statement the victim mentioned that Basudev had been harassing her in many ways since May 27 last year, the officer in charge (OC) said.
He added, “Apart from the school, the victim was taking private lessons from Basudev.”
“The teacher had harassed her even during the SSC examination, but she did not lodge any complaint considering that it might hamper her examinations,” the case statement read.
It further added that the victim had earlier filed a written complaint against Basudev to the school authorities, who did not take any action. Rather, a group of teachers had been trying to save the offender.
“Those teachers had rebuked and threatened me for filing the complaint”, the victim said.
Earlier, after the students of the school came to know of the incident, they burst out in anger and staged demonstrations in and out of the school. They demanded the teacher’s arrest and his exemplary punishment. Guardians of the students also joined the protests.
After the teacher was arrested and taken to Sutrapur police station, the students and guardians went there and staged further demonstrations demanding punishment of the teacher.
The OC at Sutrapur police station said they were interrogating the detained teacher who would also be produced before the court today, seeking remand for further interrogation.
