The unsung Ivy: University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania (referred to as Penn or UPenn) is an American private research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. University of Pennsylvania is a private institution that was founded in 1740. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 9,779. Its setting is urban, and the campus size is 279 acres. It utilises a semester-based academic calendar.

University of Pennsylvania was also home to many educational innovations. The first school of medicine in North America (Perelman School of Medicine, 1765), the first collegiate business school (Wharton, 1881), and the first student union (Houston Hall, 1896) were all born at Penn.

Penn offers a broad range of academic departments including 12 schools: Four offer undergraduate and graduate studies and eight offer only graduate studies. Penn’s highly-ranked graduate programmes include its Wharton School, School of Education, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Law School, and School of Medicine. Penn’s other notable graduate programmes include its Design School and School of Dental Medicine.

All of Penn’s schools, alone or jointly, exhibit very high research activity. Penn is consistently included among the top five research universities in the United States.

When applying to University of Pennsylvania, It is important to note the application deadline is January 1, and the early decision deadline is November 1. Scores for either the ACT or SAT test are due February 1. The application fee at University of Pennsylvania is $75( Tk5830). It is most selective, with an acceptance rate of 12.4%.

Penn also offers a number of student services, including nonremedial tutoring, women’s centre, placement service, day care, health service, and health insurance. IT has great campus safety and security services, like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport/escort service, 24-hour emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, and controlled dormitory access (key, security card, etc).

All international aid applicants (except those from Canada) must complete the College Board’s CSS PROFILE (International Student Financial Aid Application), as well as the College Board’s International Student Certification of Finances. For international application requirements, one needs to fill in the special forms found online at the webpage. Students should have received high marks on their O-levels and high school examinations and should present certified copies of the examination results with their applications to Penn. Also, one needs to show their interests in non-scholarly pursuits, community service, and extracurricular activities. It also goes without saying that an international student would need to provide results of TOEFL and SAT along with their application.

The tuition fee is $43,738(TK 3.4m around) in 2012-13.
