The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended the formulation of specific policies for the recruitment of vice-chancellors of universities in the country.

Most of the universities in the country do not have policies regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors, speakers remarked at the inaugural function of the day-long training on grievance redressal system and GRS software organized by the UGC on Wednesday.

" Most of the universities in the country do not have a clear policy on the appointment of vice-chancellor, pro-vice chancellor and treasurer,” UGC member Professor Muhammad Alamgir said.

The top regulatory body for universities also suggested the government seek the opinion of the UGC to make the recruitment process completely transparent and to appoint eminent academics and researchers as vice-chancellors.

Meanwhile, UGC Secretary Professor Ferdous Zaman called upon the authorities concerned to resolve any grievances in the higher education institutions.

On Tuesday, Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu MP and BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid criticized the VCs of different public universities over various irregularities and corruption.

They also condemned the VCs accused of recruiting their family members through corruption.

In response, Education Minister Dipu Moni said that many prominent educationists of the country were not interested in working as vice chancellors because of the administrative responsibilities involved.
