Students going in for O’ Levels and A’ Levels this year fear that their examinations, set to begin from Tuesday, might be cancelled due to the ongoing political turmoil.
The examinations are held globally and won’t be postponed for only Bangladeshi students, who as a result might lose one year and wait for the next to take the tests.
The British Council Bangladesh officials told the Dhaka Tribune if there are strikes in daytime, they might conduct the examinations at night.
But if the strikes continue, the examinations might be cancelled, they added.
About 13,000 examinees registered for the O’ Level and A’ Level examinations this year.
“We have talked to the higher authorities in England. They told us if there is strike in daytime, students can sit for examinations at night, but in case the strikes continue, the examinations may be cancelled,” said an official of the Dhaka British Council.
The examinees became worried as the political situation worsened yesterday. At least two people were killed in violence between Islamist Group Hefazat-e-Islam and law enforcement officials and the ruling party activists yesterday when the Islamist group laid siege to Dhaka siege.
The group already hinted that they would continue their agitation if their 13-point demands are not met.
“This is a weird situation which I think won’t get better. It seems that either we have to appear in the examinations at night or face the cancellations of the examinations,” said an A level examinee, Saiful Islam.
The English Medium School Students and Guardian Forum has already expressed their concern and urged political parties not to call strikes during O’ and A’ Level examinations.
Political situations are feared to deteriorate from tomorrow as a 48-hour ultimatum, declared by the main opposition BNP for the government will end this evening.
BNP and Hefazat-e-Islam, a platform of hard-line Islamists, are planning for tougher agitation programme, according to party leaders.
