Dhaka University (DU) authorities have appointed six teachers for the International Business (IB) Department reportedly in violation of relevant rules, as the teachers did not even fulfill the minimum qualification requirements.
Moreover, extra recruitments were made in the department, and also in that of World Religion and Culture (WRC), in a syndicate meeting on Wednesday night with DU Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
A total of nine teachers were selected for seven vacant posts in the IB department, while the DU authorities hired four teachers in the WRC Department after a circular was published stating just two vacancies.
A syndicate member, requesting anonymity, said six out of the nine newly-appointed IB Department teachers failed to meet the minimum eligibility requirements, with two of them being hired without vacancies.
According to the source, only three teachers- Hazera Akhter, Fahmida Mustafiz and Anamika Dutta - qualified for the post of lecturer. The others--Biswas, Mauri Mehtaj, Asimina Akhter, Mohammad Mobarak Hossain, Kazi Md Jamshed and Ekramul Huda- did not fulfill the job requirements.
The circular had asked for candidates with a four-year BBA (Hons) degree and an MBA in International Business, with a 3.75 CGPA out of 4 in both the exams as the minimum qualification. The circular also mentioned a GPA of 4.25 out of 5 in the SSC and HSC examinations to qualify for the posts.
The syndicate member also said the circular, which asked for two permanent and three temporary posts, had mentioned that two additional teachers could be recruited temporarily if needed, which was enforced only to help the daughter of an influential teacher of the business faculty get a job.
“Mauri Mehtaz, the daughter of Marketing Department Professor Dr Belayet Hossain, could not apply for the post last time as she failed to fulfill the basic requirements,” said a teacher of the IB Departmant asking not to be named.
Meanwhile, at least two out of the four recruits at the WRC Department were not even among the top four qualified candidates, another syndicate member said.
In addition, recruitment of four teachers for just two vacant posts is a clear violation of the university law, he alleged.
The university syndicate in a meeting on February 17, 2013, had decided that at best one additional teacher can be hired in any department or institute. However, the university’s co-ordination and development committee has to be informed about the recommendation prior to the meeting of the selection board on the additional recruitment.
When asked about the allegations, VC Arefin Siddique said: “The appointments were made following the recommendations of the selection board, which verified the eligibility of the candidates before hiring them.”
Regarding the issue of the minimum eligibility being unfulfilled, he said it is a matter for the selection committee, which will handle the issue.
