Dhaka University to honour IAEA DG Yukiya Amano in special convocation

A special convocation ceremony of the Dhaka University (DU) will be held on Tuesday to honour International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano for promoting safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. Amano will also deliver a speech at the ceremony scheduled to begin at 2:30pm at the university's Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Tuesday. President Md Abdul Hamid, the Dhaka University Chancellor, will chair the event where an honorary Doctorate of Law degree will be given to Amano. The IAEA is the international centre for cooperation in the nuclear field. It works with its member states and partners to promote safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

Amano will deliver a lecture on 'nuclear power for peace and development'. Born in Japan on May 9, 1947, Amano was elected the IAEA director general in 2009. He joined his country's foreign ministry in 1972 after graduating from Tokyo University. Amano arrived in Dhaka on Sunday on a four-day official visit. He is leading a three-member delegation. They visited Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project in Pabna on Monday. On the third day of the visit, Amano is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali. The IAEA delegation will leave Dhaka on Wednesday.
