The Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) virtually held its two-day "6thInter-University Student Conference and Cultural Competition."
The theme of this year’s conference was “Of Nations and Narrations”, said a press release.
The two-day conference featured academic paper presentations on September 3 and a cultural competition on September 4.
Ameenah Ahmed, member, ULAB Board of Trustees, was present as chief guest.
Judges for the academic presentations were Ahrar Ahmed, professor emeritus, Black Hills State University, USA and director general, Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Foundation; and Sharmistha Chatterjee, associate professor of English, Aliah University, Kolkata.
Judges for the cultural competition were Luva Nahid Choudhury, director general, Bengal Foundation and director-administration, Bengal Institute for Architecture; and Masum Reza, playwright and director.
Eight universities participated in the academic paper competition, while five universities competed for the prize in the cultural competition.
Ameenah Ahmed, in her speech, praised this initiative by the Department of English and Humanities as it brought so much talent together.
Despite the online environment, students showcased their research skills and creative abilities in an outstanding manner, she added.
She announced the winner of the cultural competition, ULAB, for its performance entitled “Notions of Nation.”
The team from the University of Dhaka won the runner-up award.
Special Guest Prof HM Jahirul Haque, vice chancellor of ULAB, appreciated the enthusiastic performances of the students and announced the winners of the academic paper presentations, who were Solika Akter of Dhaka University for Best Paper and Sabrina Momtaj of Jahangirnagar University for runner-up paper.
Professor Kaiser Haq, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, gave the welcome address of the event and Prof Shamsad Mortuza, pro vice-chancellor and head of the Department of English and Humanities gave the vote of thanks.
The conference convener was Dr. Sohana Manzoor, associate professor of DEH.
