Parents of English medium schools: No tuition fees hike in 3 years

They demand forming a regulatory body to monitor the activities of schools

Update : 25 Jul 2020, 11:25 PM

Parents of English medium school students have demanded that school authorities should not raise tuition fees for the next three years.

Bangladesh English School Parents’ Association (BESPA) made the call on Saturday during an event at the National Press Club, when it demanded the formation of a regulatory body to monitor the activities of English medium schools.

They argued many parents are struggling financially amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Guardians said that school authorities have to stop, what they described as “psychological torture and inhuman activities” for not paying fees or paying late during the pandemic.

Similar demands were made by several English Medium students’ parents forum since the onset of the pandemic.

They asked the school authorities to control and monitor bullying, discrimination, physical harassment and abuse in line with the “child safeguard policy statement”.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, BESPA Convenor Prof Masud A Khan said they have floated a 14-point demand, including not to increase tuition and other fees and the yearly re-admission fees for the next three academic years.

He also claimed that schools recruit comparatively underqualified teachers and terminate them whimsically, pay less to teachers prompting them to go for tutoring students outside and that there’s no representation of the parents in the decision-making process of the schools.
