Coronavirus: Coaching centres also to remain closed till April 9

Decision taken at meeting chaired by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni

The government has extended the period of shutdown until April 9 for all educational institutions, including all coaching centres, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The Education Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Md Abul Khair, told the media of the decision, reports Bangla Tribune.

He said: “This decision was taken during a meeting at the ministry chaired by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Tuesday.”

"During the closure, students will stay at home and abide by health directives issued by the IEDCR," Dr Dipu Moni said during the meeting.

She also said recorded lectures would be televised for students. Lectures for sixth to tenth graders would be aired starting March 28.

Earlier, the Education Ministry closed all the schools, colleges and universities from March 18 to 31 due to the global pandemic, and postponed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations scheduled to start on April 1.

As of Wednesday, Bangladesh recorded five deaths and 39 infections from the Covid-19 pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The fast spreading coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has claimed more than 16,700 lives and infected over 386,000 people across the world till date, according to Worldometer.

More than 102,000 people have recovered from the virus, which has now spread to 196 countries.
