The grade point average (GPA) 4 grading system will be introduced to Junior School Certificate (JSC), and university levels from next year.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Education Ministry, regarding the change over from the  GPA 5 system to GPA 4, at the International Mother Language Institute on Sunday.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni presided over the meeting.

According to the ministry, the decision was taken to comply with grades of international, and local private universities, through which problems while getting a job, or enrolling in foreign universities could be avoided.

Dipu said: “There is an unhealthy competition, the guardians are used to getting GPA 5 when it comes to their children, and this must be stopped. Also there are complications created when a person applies for a job abroad.”

There was a workshop after the meeting organized by the Secondary and Higher Education Division, where the possible advantages of introducing the GPA 4 grading system were discussed.

Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research (IER) Professors SM Hafizur Rahman, and Hosne Ara Begum, top level officials of Education Ministry, Secondary and Higher Education Division, and National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) were present at the event, among others.
