The department of mass communication and journalism at Dhaka University (DU) held a post-retirement reception for some of its retired teachers at TSC Auditorium.
Former DU vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the ceremony around 11am on Tuesday.
Honorary Prof Dr Sakhawat Ali Khan, Chief Information Commissioner Prof Dr Golam Rahman, Prof Shamsul Majid Harun and Prof Kazi Abdul Mannan were the former teachers who were honoured at the reception.
The annual fresher’s reception and farewell programme of the department was also held during the same event, where newcomers of the 2016-17 academic year were formally welcomed into the university and the graduating students who enrolled in 2012-13 academic year were given a farewell.
Addressing the programme, Prof Arefin Siddique said the primary objective of a journalist was to reveal the truth behind the curtain.
“Students of this department have always played a pivotal role in the field of professional journalism,” added the former vice-chancellor.
He urged the outgoing students to utilise their knowledge of journalism with honesty and boldness in their respective working arena.
The reception was followed by a spectacular cultural programme staged by the current students of the department.
