The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities apprehended four admission seekers on Sunday for hiring proxies to sit their exams and securing top places on the merit list of the entry test for the 2017-18 academic year.
The university authorities found out when they cross-checked the handwriting of the examinees as per law during viva-voce, which did not match with those in the answer scripts submitted in their name in the written test.
The detainees were identified as Mahbub Hossain from Bogra, Ashikul Hasan Rabin from Kushtia, Emam Hossain from Mymensingh and Amit Hasan from Dhaka.
Emam Hossain secured third position and Ashikul Hasan Rabin secured 16th position on the merit list of the Faculty of Law and Justice, while Amit Hasan secured 11th position on the merit list of the Institute of Information Technology and Mahbub Hossaain secured third position on the merit list of the Faculty of Business Studies.
Although Ashikul Hasan Rabin denied the allegation, the others confessed to hiring proxies before JU Proctor Tapan Kumar Saha.
They also gave written confessional statements to the proctor.
In his statement, Amit said he struck a deal with Sonet, a student attached to Sir AF Rahman Hall in Dhaka University, to be his proxy at the price of Tk6 lakh. The other two also admitted to paying between Tk3-6 lakh to their proxies to sit their exam.
Proctor Tapan Kumar Saha said: “After interrogation, we confirmed that they secured the position in different units by using proxies and we handed them over to Ashulia police station.”
A case was filed at the Ashulia police station in this connection.
