Scuffle between two pro-AL teachers' groups at DU

A scuffle has ensued between two factions of teachers at DU, during a general meeting of the Blue Panel at the university on Thursday. According to a teacher at the meeting, who asked to remain anonymous, the brawl took place after supporters of former DU vice-chancellor Prof Arefin Siddique protested foul language and insults directed at him by supporters of DU Teachers' Association President Prof Maksud Kamal. DU Sociology Department's Prof AKM Jamal Uddin, who suffered injuries in the incident, told the Dhaka Tribune: "At the meeting, the supporters of Prof Maksud Kamal were hurling insults at former VC Arefin Siddique. When DU Proctor Golam Rabbani also began insulting the former VC, I stood up to protest." "At that point, two supporters of the Teachers' Association president - Pharmacy Department Chairman Sitesh Chandra Bachar and Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department's Prof Shah Mohammed Masum - began beating me with a chair," he claimed. Jamal Uddin further said that the beating stopped when fellow supporters of former VC Arefin Siddique formed human shield wall between him and the attackers. When contacted, DU Proctor Golam Rabbani denied the allegations and claimed that Jamal Uddin had pushed him.
