19th International Mathematics Conference at BRAC University

In collaboration with Bangladesh Mathematical Society, Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS) Department, BRAC University organised the 19th International Mathematics Conference from December 18 to 20. The theme of the conference was “Mathematics: Enigma and Reality.”

The inaugural ceremony of the conference was held at 10am on Friday, 18 December at the BRAC Centre Inn, Mohakhali, Dhaka. Professor Abdul Mannan, chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh was the chief guest while Professor Sajeda Banu, president of Bangladesh Mathematical Society was present as the special guest. The welcoming address was delivered by Munibar Rahman Chowdhury, former professor of the University of Dhaka followed by an address by Professor Sajeda Banu. Professor A A Z Ahmad, chair of the Organising Committee and chairperson, Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department, BRAC University, presided over the ceremony in which participants from both home and abroad took part. The invited speakers from abroad included Professor Michel Waldschmidt of Universite’ Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France, Dr Ding Liu of Xidian University, China, Dr Binayak S Chowdhury from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, India and Dr Absos Ali Shaikh from the University of Burdwan, India.

In the technical sessions held from December 18 to 20, papers were presented on various aspects of mathematics and its applications. Talks were also given on the mathematics education in Bangladesh and China. The vice chancellor of the University of Dhaka hosted a dinner at his residence in the evening of 18 December, after which a cultural program was organised in the next day in the BRAC University Auditorium.

The closing ceremony of the conference was held on December 20 at the auditorium of BRAC University. Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, vice chancellor, BRAC University was the chief guest. Professor Md Shahidul Islam, secretary, Bangladesh Mathematical Society, delivered the welcoming address. Professor Michel Waldschmidt then addressed the audience on behalf of the participants from abroad, hoping the Bangladesh Mathematical Society would make further strides in the international arena for promotion of education and research in mathematics. Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb expressed his satisfaction over the successful culmination of the conference and thanked the Bangladesh Mathematical Society for giving BRAC University the opportunity to organise the event. Professor A A Z Ahmad, in his presidential address, emphasised on the interaction and collaboration between the mathematicians of Bangladesh and those from abroad.
