Update : 14 Nov 2015, 07:46 PM

Teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), who are protesting against the university’s vice-chancellor, boycotted the admission test for 2015-16 academic year which took place yesterday.

The teachers, Under the banner “Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkak Forum,” boycotted the test because their demands for the VC’s resignation and proper prosecution of the August 30 attack on teachers were not met, said the forum’s spokesperson Dr Syed Shamsul Alam.

At least 130 teachers refrained from performing their duties during the test as a protest, he told the Dhaka Tribune.

On August 30, seven teachers were harassed by Chhatra League activists in front of the VC’s office as the teachers tried to enter it.

SUST authorities formed a three-member committee headed by Dr Sabina Islam to investigate the incident.

SUST Proctor Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that the committee had yet to submit the report of their probe.

However, having the rejected the committee which also includes the proctor and Assistant Professor Amina Parvin, the protesting teachers decided to boycott the admission test, sources said.

The forum started their movement against VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan on April 13, alleging him of corruption and misconduct.

Later, on April 20, 35 teachers, including Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal, resigned from different administrative posts at the SUST demanding the removal of the VC.

The admission test of the first semester of the first-year class took place at 31 centres around the Sylhet city, said Dr Narayan Saha, president of the admission test committee.

A total of 41,285 applicants appeared in the examination against 1,528 seats in the university, including the special quota seats.

A student from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology named Md Nasir Uddin was caught while taking the test as a proxy.

The proctor confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune and said the student had been handed over to a mobile court.
