The ruling party Awami League-backed teachers at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have swept the polls to the teachers’ representative in JU senate.
The pro Awami League teachers’ panel ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Progotishil Shikkhak Samaj’ bagged 25 out of 33 posts of teachers’ representative of university’s senate, source said.
The pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party, left-leaning and a section of pro Awami League teachers’ combined panel ‘Shammilita Shikkhak Samaj won some 8 seats in the election.
JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique who was the returning officer of the polls declared the result around 11:30pm at the senate hall in the administrative building in the university.
A total of some 476 teachers out of 495 teachers in the university casted their votes in the election.
University sources said the vote casting began from 9am at JU Teachers’ Club which continued till 2pm on Sunday.
According to declared result of JU senate teachers’ representative polls, the elected teachers from pro-Awami League panel loyal to the university authorities were, Prof Ajit Kumar Mazumder of statistics department, Prof Kabirul Bashar of zoology department, Prof Koushik Saha and Prof Tapan Kumar Saha of chemistry department, Prof Forid Ahmed of physics department, Prof Bashir Ahmed of government and politics department, Prof Md Hanif Ali of computer science and engineering department, Prof Md Amzad Hossain of economics department, Associate Prof Md Bakhtiar Rana of IBA-JU, Prof Md Anwar Khasru of microbiology department, Prof Md Khabir Uddin of environmental science department, Prof Md Khaled Hossain of bangla department, Md Khalid Kuddus of international relations department, Md Motaher Hossain of IBA-JU, Prof Layek Sazzad Endellah of mathematics department, Prof Lutfar Rahman Lebu of drama and dramatics department, Prof Md Shahedur Rahman of geography and environment department, Prof Rasheda Akhter of anthropology department, Prof Rasheda Akhter Shilpi of botany department, Prof Satrajit Kuma Saha of mathematics department, Prof Syed Hafizur Rahman of environmental science department, Prof Shukallan Kumar Kundu of pharmacy department, Prof Sufi Mustafizur Rahman of archeology department and Hosneara Baby of history department.
Meanwhile, the elected teachers’ representatives from the opposition combined panel were Prof AA Mamun of physics department, Prof ATM Atikur Rahman of history department, Prof Noim Sultan of government and politics department, Prof Firoza Hossain of botany department, Maliha Nargis Hossain of archeology department, Prof Mahbub Kabir of chemistry department, Prof Md Sharif Uddin of mathematics department and Prof Sohel Rana of pharmacy department, source said.
Physics department teacher Prof AA Mamun from the combined panel of ‘Shammilita Shikkhak Samaj’ secured the highest votes of 281 followed by anthropology department teacher Prof Rasheda Akhter of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Progotishil Shikkhak Samaj’ with 265 votes.
Some 8 independent candidates also contested in the polls but did not have any posts.
The last election to teachers’ representative for JU senate was held in 2010 although the election should be held every three years according to university act, source said.
