94th anniversary of Dhaka University today

The Dhaka University Day will be celebrated on the campus today with much festivity and enthusiasm, marking the 94th anniversary of the university.

This year’s celebration theme is “Higher education and sustainable development,” according to a press release. Celebration programmes for today include hoisting flags at the top of all student dormitories and main buildings of the university, bringing out procession, research exhibition, discussions, cultural sessions and a short film show.

Dr Gowher Rizvi, adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will inaugurate the day-long celebrations in the morning.

Established during the British rule, Dhaka University started its academic activities on July 1, 1921 with three faculties: arts, science and law, and 12 departments: Sanskrit and Bengali, English, education, history, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Persian and Urdu, philosophy, economics and politics, physics, chemistry, mathematics and law. Currently, around 33,000 students study at the university under 13 faculties and 11 institutes.
