Tension prevailed on the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology for the ninth consecutive days yesterday as leaders and activist of the Bangladesh Chhatra League were in confronting situation with teachers who are demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.
Campus sources said teachers under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikshokbrindo’ took position in front of VC’s office around 8am. Then, a group of BCL men gathered there and chanted slogans against the agitating teachers which created panic among general students.
On receiving information, President of Shikhok Samity Kabir Hossain rushed to the spot and urged BCL men to move away from there. Kabir Hossain said the overall situation of the campus was volatile. He also sought government’s intervention in this regard.
Some students said a section of teachers to gain their own interests were making the campus unstable.
They said the education minister should take prompt measures to bring back congenial atmosphere on the campus.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan visited university centre and talked with Students’ Welfare Advisor Dr Rashed Talukdar and Professor Kamaruzzaman.
A tensed situation has been prevailing on the campus since Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan came back to the university on June 22.
On April 23, Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan went on a two-month leave amid protest in the university in demand of his resignation.
The tension was erupted on April 13 when 19 teachers from the physics department and geography and environment department of the university went to hold a talk with the VC over space allocation between the departments on April 13.
Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque, head of the physics department, and Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin, head of the geography and environment science department, resigned on the same day following an altercation with the VC.
