Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University authorities have placed their budgets for the 2015-16 fiscal year yesterday with a remarkable figure of deficit.
DU Treasurer Prof Dr Kamal Uddin tabled the budget of Tk425.50 crore in its annual senate meeting with Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair for the final approval. Last year’s budget was Tk 373.88 crore.
Of the amount, the university will ensure Tk39 crore from its internal sources while the University Grants Commission will give Tk 371.15 crore.
However, there will have a deficit of Tk15.35 crore as the authorities have failed to get the amount from the government.
According to the budget, a major portion of the budget will be spent for salaries and other benefits of teachers and the other DU staff. Its ration would be about 75.33% of the figure. On the other hand, only Tk4.5 crore and 50.51% have been kept for education and research respectively.
Besides, Jahangirnagar University authorities approved Tk119 crore as the annual budget for the fiscal year 2015-16 with a deficit of Tk862.06 lakh.
The budget was passed at the 34th senate meeting of the university held at the Senate Hall of the registrar’s office. JU Treasurer Professor Abul Khayer presented the budget while JU Vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam presided over the programme, source said.
According to the presentation, the revised budget of FY2014-15 was Tk114.90 crore with a deficit of Tk24.74 crore. Of Tk119 crore, the university will earn Tk1.25 crore from its own sources while the rest will come from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
