A student of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail has been killed in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The deceased is Mosharraf Hossain, a second-semester student of physics of the university.

The university authority announced an indefinite closure of the university after the deadly clash on Wednesday afternoon.

Proctor Khademul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune the students have been asked to leave the residential halls by 10am on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Alauddin ordered to keep the university closed until further notice, the proctor said.

The clash between a faction led by Monirul Islam and the other led by Mosharraf Hossain erupted when Mosharraf and his followers entered the campus at 3pm.

At one stage, the fellows of Monirul started to hack at Mosharraf and his associate "Faisal" with a sharp machete.

The proctor said Mosharraf and Faisal were taken to Tangail Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

When their condition deteriorated, they were transferred to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation at Dhaka.

Tangail Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Pranbandhu Biswas said tensions has risen on the campus following the incident.

Additional police were deployed to avoid any further untoward situation, the official said.
