Seven Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Dhaka University have allegedly beaten up seven fellow Chhatra League activists, who had been accused of having a membership to Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, before handing over the suspected Shibir men to police.
The seven suspected Shibir men are Zillur Rahman, Mahbub Alam and Nazmul Hasan from Sir AF Rahman Hall, Emon Hossain and Raihan from Masterda Surja Sen Hall, Al Amin Hawladar from Bijay Ekattar Hall and Monirul Islam from Zia Hall.
"They were suspected involved with Shibir and militant outfits. BCL activists and general students identified them and handed over to police on Saturday night," Chhatra League DU Unit General Secretary Motahar Hossain Prince said as quoted by UNB.
Monirul Islam, a first-year student at the Psychology Department, was assaulted on Saturday in Room 225 of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, allegedly by Chhatra League at Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, all second year students.
The accused attackers are Imrul Kaiser, deputy secretary of mass education and a student at the Urdu Department, Mahmudul Hasan, deputy secretary of religious affairs and a student at the Islamic History and Culture Department, Ali Reza Khan, deputy secretary of human resources and a student at Institute of Health Economics, Sujon Mahmud Babar, deputy secretary of education and student-scholarship and a student at the History Department, Mahmudul Hasan Jepu, assistant secretary and a student at the Sociology Department, Ali Hossain, assistant secretary and a student at the Political Science Department, and Nizarul Islam, a working member and a student at the Urdu Department.
The alleged are under the purview of the president of the hall unit Yousuf Uddin Khan, under whom Monirul was also overseen.
Yousuf suspects the former president, Salman Pradhan Shawon and the general secretary, Motahar Hossain Prince as the chief offenders. He said: “The seats were allotted to students without any verification, so we probably have a snipping and filtering activity.”
Yousuf also added that Monirul had shared a post by the Chhatra Shibir Rajshahi College Unit on Facebook, back in 2016. “We have the screenshots as proof,” claimed Yousuf.
Eye witnesses stated that Ataur Rahman, a Shibir activist was kicked out of the hall that evening during a hunt for Shibir supporters, when Jihadi books and CDs were found in his possession. However, despite the accusations, no corroborating proof could be found that Monirul was a Shibir activist.
During the assault, Monirul stated that he was a Chhatra League activist.
Monirul attempting to explain the situation, clarified: “I belong to a poor family, and State Minister Shahriar Alam pays for my studies. My family could not afford an Android cellphone and so I bought my first phone this year. In college, I opened a Facebook account and logged onto it using my friend's phone. My friend was a Shibir activist who had shared a post using my Facebook id, which was logged in on his phone.”
Chhatra League Central President Saifur Rahman Sohag said: “We stand against the Shibir. We do not want to harass an ordinary student. If any Chhatra League leader tries to harass an ordinary student without allegation or proof, we shall take organisational steps against them.”
Rajshahi's Sadar Union Parishad Chairman and Joint Secretary of Charghat Upazilla Awami League, Hasanuzzaman Madhu stated: “Monirul's family votes for the Nauka [the Boat, the Awami League’s electoral symbol]. Monirul also worked for me during the last election in 2016.”
Monirul was first accepted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment. He was later handed over to the police by the hall Chhatra League leader Yousuf Uddin Khan.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbag police station Abul Hasan said: “I will question Monirul. Nothing cannot be said before the interrogation.”
